What is ABS plastic?

ABS plastic is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile (A), butadiene (B) and styrene (S). The relative content of the three monomers can be changed arbitrarily to make various resins. ABS has the common properties of three components. A makes ABS resistant to chemical corrosion and heat, and has certain surface hardness. B makes ABS highly elastic and ductile. S makes ABS have the processing and forming characteristics of thermoplastic and improves its electrical properties. Therefore, ABS plastic is a kind of “tough, hard and rigid” material which is easy to obtain, has good comprehensive performance, cheap price and widely used. ABS plastics are widely used in machinery, electrical, textile, automobile, aircraft, ship and other manufacturing industries and chemical industry.

Molecular structure

The structure of ABS resin includes a graft copolymer with elastomer as the main chain and a graft copolymer with rigid ABS resin as the main chain, or a mixture of rubber elastomer and rigid ABS resin. In this way, different structures show different properties, elastomers show the toughness of rubber, rigid ABS resin shows the rigidity, and several kinds of high impact, medium impact, general impact and special impact can be obtained. Specifically, with the increase of rubber component B (generally 5% ~ 30%), the elasticity and impact resistance of the resin will increase, but the tensile strength, fluidity and weather resistance will decrease. When the content of resin component as (70% ~ 95%) is increased, the surface gloss, mechanical strength, weather resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, electrical performance and processing performance will be improved. However, the impact strength will decrease. The proportion of a and B in the resin is 30% ~ 35% / 80% ~ 65% respectively.

Main characteristics

Plastic ABS resin is the largest production and most widely used polymer. It combines all kinds of properties of Pb, pan and PS organically, and has excellent mechanical properties of toughness, hardness and rigid phase balance. ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. A represents acrylonitrile, B represents butadiene and s represents styrene. After practical use, it is found that ABS plastic pipe is not resistant to sulfuric acid corrosion, and it will break when meeting sulfuric acid.
Because of its three components, it has good properties; acrylonitrile has chemical stability, oil resistance, certain rigidity and hardness; butadiene has improved its toughness, impact and cold resistance; styrene has good dielectric properties and good processability.
Most ABS are non-toxic and impermeable, but slightly permeable steam, with low water absorption. The water absorption of room temperature immersion for one year is not more than 1%, and the physical properties do not change. ABS resin products can be polished to obtain high gloss products. It is 3-5 times stronger than ordinary plastics.
ABS has excellent comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, good low-temperature impact resistance. Dimensional stability. Electrical properties, wear resistance, chemical resistance, dyeability, finished product processing and machining are better. ABS resin is resistant to water, inorganic salt, alkali and acid, insoluble in most alcohol and hydrocarbon solvents, but easily soluble in aldehydes, ketones, esters and some chlorinated hydrocarbons. ABS resin has low heat deformation temperature and poor heat resistance. The melting temperature is 217 ~ 237 ℃, and the thermal decomposition temperature is above 250 ℃. Nowadays, many modified ABS materials in the market are mixed with nozzle materials and recycled materials. As a result, the customer’s molding product performance is not very stable.

(1) Material performance

  • It has good comprehensive performance, high impact strength, chemical stability and electrical performance;
  • It has good fusibility with 372 plexiglass and can be made into two-color plastic parts, and can be chrome plated and painted on the surface;
  • It has high impact resistance, high heat resistance, flame retardant, reinforcement, transparency and other levels;
  • Fluidity is a little bit worse than hips, better than PMMA, PC, etc., and better flexibility;
  • Suitable for making general mechanical parts, wear-resistant parts, transmission parts and telecommunication parts.

(2) Formability

  • Amorphous material, medium fluidity, high moisture absorption, must be fully dried, the surface of plastic parts requiring luster must be preheated and dried for 80-90 degrees for a long time, 3 hours;
  • High material temperature and mold temperature should be taken, but the material temperature is too high and easy to decompose (decomposition temperature is > 270 ℃). For high precision plastic parts, the mold temperature should be 50-60 ℃, for high gloss and heat-resistant plastic parts, the mold temperature should be 60-80 ℃;
  • In order to solve the water inclusion, it is necessary to improve the fluidity of the material by means of high material temperature, high mold temperature or changing the water level;
  • For example, if heat-resistant or flame-retardant materials are formed, there will be residual plastic decomposition on the surface of the mold 3-7 days after production, which will cause the surface of the mold to shine, so it is necessary to clean the mold in time and increase the exhaust position on the surface of the mold;
  • The cooling speed is fast. The pouring system of the mold should be based on the principle of coarse and short. It is better to set a cooling hole and the gate should be large, such as direct gate, disc gate or fan gate, etc., but the internal stress should be prevented from increasing. If necessary, the adjustable gate can be used. The mould should be heated and wear-resistant steel should be selected;
  • The material temperature has a great influence on the quality of the plastic part. If the material temperature is too low, it will cause material shortage, the surface will be lusterless. If the material temperature is too high, it will easily overflow the edge, and the silver wire will appear dark strip, and the plastic part will change color and blister;
  • Mold temperature has a great influence on the quality of plastic parts. When the mold temperature is low, shrinkage, elongation, impact strength, bending resistance, compression resistance and tensile strength are low. When the mold temperature is over 120 ℃, the cooling of the plastic part is slow, it is easy to deform and stick the mold, it is difficult to demould, and the molding cycle is long;
  • The forming shrinkage is small, it is easy to melt and crack and produce stress concentration, so the forming conditions should be strictly controlled during forming, and the plastic parts should be annealed after forming;
  • High melting temperature, high viscosity, not sensitive to shear. For plastic parts larger than 200g, screw injection machine should be used. The nozzle should be heated, open extended nozzle should be used, with medium and high injection speed.

Preparation method

There are many production methods of ABS, which can be divided into four categories, i.e. blending method, grafting method, combination method, grafting blending method, and about eleven preparation processes. Most of the emulsion methods are used nowadays, and the most promising method is emulsion grafting. By changing the proportion of the three monomers and adopting different polymerization methods, ABS can produce various specifications of products. The structure of ABS includes the graft copolymer with elasticity as the main chain and the graft copolymer with resin as the main chain. Generally, the proportion of the three monomers is about 25% – 35% of acrylonitrile, 25% – 30% of butanediene and 40% – 50% of styrene.
Because PC / ABS is a blend of two kinds of polymers, and PC is the main component, sometimes there are spots in the gate when processing products, usually because the melt expands into the mold cavity during high-speed injection. Melt fracture. Starting from the molding process, we can take measures such as increasing the material temperature, increasing the nozzle temperature and slowing down the injection speed to reduce the appearance of PC / ABS product speckle. We can also improve the mold temperature, add the excessive groove, increase the gate size and modify the gate shape to solve this problem. For example, fan gate or ear gate can be used for large-scale thin-walled parts. An ear groove is added at the gate outlet, so that the jet near the gate, material flow impact mark and residual stress are concentrated in the ear groove, without affecting the quality of PC / ABS parts. At the same time, because of the injection of multiple gates or the number of shunt channels, there will also be fusion lines.

Performance

Conventional performance

The plastic ABS is nontoxic and tasteless, and its appearance is ivory translucent, or transparent particles or powder. Density is 1.05-1.18g/cm3, shrinkage is 0.4% – 0.9%, modulus of elasticity is 2gpa, Poisson’s ratio is 0.394, hygroscopicity is less than 1%, melting temperature is 217-237 ℃, thermal decomposition temperature is more than 250 ℃.

Mechanical property

Plastic ABS has excellent mechanical properties, good impact strength, and can be used at very low temperature; plastic ABS has excellent wear resistance, good dimensional stability, and oil resistance, and can be used for bearings under medium load and low speed. The creep resistance of ABS is larger than that of PSF and PC, but smaller than that of PA and POM.

Thermal Properties

The thermal deformation temperature of plastic ABS is 93 ~ 118 ℃, and after annealing, the temperature of products can be increased about 10 ℃. ABS can still show certain toughness at – 40 ℃, and can be used in the temperature range of – 40 ~ 100 ℃.

Electrical properties

The electrical insulation of plastic ABS is good, and it is hardly affected by temperature, humidity and frequency. It can be used in most environments.

Environmental performance

Plastic ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salt, alkali and many kinds of acids, but it is soluble in ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It will produce stress cracking when eroded by glacial acetic acid and vegetable oil. ABS has poor weather resistance and is easy to degrade under the action of ultraviolet light; after half a year outdoor, the impact strength is reduced by half.

Prospects for development

ABS is a general thermoplastic engineering plastic developed in the 1940s. It is a kind of plastic with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. It not only has good rigidity, hardness and processing fluidity, but also has high toughness. It can be injected, extruded or thermoformed. Most auto parts are processed by injection molding.
